The Gun Room was created, from two forty-foot shipping containers, to house the ongoing conservation of a Prince Rupert patent Demi-Cannon and carriage raised from the wreck of the Stirling Castle. This unique archaeological find is being conserved for public display.

The Carriage is currently away receiving the final stage of it’s conservation but the Gun Room contains information on it’s current disposition and the work that is being done to it. The Gun itself returned in March of 2008 and is on display, while the carriage will be absent until 2009.
Prince Rupert of the Rhine.

Rupert was the nephew of Charles I and was a cavalry officer during the 1st English Civil War and a naval officer during the 2nd Civil War. Later in his life he turned more attention to his other interests: science and the arts.
The methods for making a Prince Rupert Patent cannon, died with him and only a dozen or so such weapons remain today.
This temporary facility also houses further displays as space permits. Currently the Gun Room is host to a display on Naval Gunnery, which complements it’s long term inhabitant, and an exhibition on the history of Ramsgate’s ferries.
