John Smeaton FRS.

Often regarded as the father of modern engineering, John Smeaton (1724-1792) is best known for designing the third Eddystone Lighthouse and for first coining the term “civil engineer”. From 1774 he oversaw much of the construction and development of the harbour at Ramsgate.
