The Great Storm Of 1703.
On November the 26th, 1703 a storm swept over the whole of southern England. Ships sheltering in the Downs, a stretch of water given shelter by the treacherous Goodwin Sands, were hit hard by gale force winds and driving rain. Many of those ships, including a part of the fleet under Sir Clowdisly Shovell, weathered the storm intact but others, such as the squadron commanded by Rear Admiral Basil Beaumont, were less lucky.
Beaumont’s flagship, the Mary, was lost along with the Men O’ War Stirling Castle, Northumberland and Restoration.
