The ceremony marks the 66th Anniversary of the Royal Navy and Fleet Air Arm attempts to halt the passage of the battle cruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and the cruiser Prinz Eugen from the French port of Brest to their home base in Kiel, Germany in 1942 – the famous Channel Dash. The action resulted in the deaths of Lt. Cdr Eugene Esmonde, V.C; D.S.O; RN, and twelve of his Fairy Swordfish aircrew. Weather permitting, Sundowner and an Estuary Services pilot launch will leave Ramsgate on the morning of the 12th and rendezvous with vessels from Dover at a point in Trinity Bay where the ceremony is scheduled for about 12.45pm.
