Standard Raising at Ramsgate
Nine o’clock on the morning of Saturday July 19th saw the raising of the Royal Standard of George IV in celebration of the town’s enjoying the country’s only Royal Harbour. This annual event takes place on the anniversary of George IV’s Coronation in 1820, and is matched by similar occasions on the anniversaries of the Ascension and of George IV’s birthday.
The next Standard Raising will be that marking his birthday and will take place on Tuesday August the 12th in Pier Yard, outside the Ramsgate Maritime Museum.
Viking Ship Departs Ramsgate
The Havhingsten Fra Glendalough (“Seastallion from Glandalough”), a replica Viking Longship, departed Ramsgate on the 17th of July to continue her journey home to Denmark.
The Seastallion arrived in the harbour on the morning of the 15th and attracted quite a bit of attention from locals during her stay over in the marina. More information on the ship and her voyage can be found on their own website at www.havhingsten.dk.
Summer Solstice on the Ramsgate Meridian
21st June marks the Summer Solstice – the Longest Day of the year – and one of only four annual dates on which Apparent Solar Time at Greenwich agrees with Greenwich Mean Time. On that date Apparent Solar Noon at Greenwich will concur with 12 Noon Greenwich Mean Time.
In Ramsgate, Apparent Solar Noon will occur 5mins 41secs earlier i.e. at 11.54 & 19 seconds A.M. (GMT). As clocks are currently maintaining British Summer Time, Apparent Solar Noon at Ramsgate will therefore occur at 12.54 & 19 seconds A.M. BST.
Visit the museum’s John Rennie Room, Ramsgate’s former solar observatory and the site of the Ramsgate Meridian Line, and witness the Crossing of the Line (weather permitting). Whatever the weather we will be celebrating the solstice by giving a goody bag to each child under twelve who visits the museum on the 21st.
