Sundowner to attend wreath laying off Deal
On Tuesday 12th February 2008 Ramsgate Maritime Museum’s Dunkirk ‘Little Ship’ Sundowner will be joining the Royal Navy’s mine counter –measures vessel HMS Ledbury, patrol boat HMS Raider and other
craft in a wreath laying ceremony off Deal. The ceremony marks the 66th Anniversary of the Royal Navy and Fleet Air Arm attempts to halt the passage of the battle cruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and the cruiser Prinz Eugen from the French port of Brest to their home base in Kiel, Germany in 1942 – the famous Channel Dash. The action resulted in the deaths of Lt. Cdr Eugene Esmonde, V.C; D.S.O; RN, and twelve of his Fairy Swordfish aircrew. Weather permitting, Sundowner and an Estuary Services pilot launch will leave Ramsgate on the morning of the 12th and rendezvous with vessels from Dover at a point in Trinity Bay where the ceremony is scheduled for about 12.45pm. For more details visit the Channel Dash Association’s website at www.channeldash.org.
Christmas Opening Hours
The EKMT’s museums will be closed over the following holiday periods.
Ramsgate Maritime Museum
Closed from Sunday the 23rd of December, re-opening on Thursday the 3rd of January.
Margate Museum
Closed from Thursday the 20th of December, re-opening on Wednesday the 9th of January.
At other times the museums will operate their normal winter hours. The staff of both museums and of the EKMT wish all of their patrons a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Exhibition on Ramsgate’s Ferries
Although planned to run only until the end of the year, the Ferries exhibition in the Gun Room has been given an extended lease of life by the delay in the return of the Rupertino Cannon. This means that it will be available for viewing through December and January.
Update on The Stirling Castle Gun
Following the boring out of the barrel it is necessary for the Cannon to undergo a final electrolysis treatment. This will extend the duration of the work such that the gun is expected back around March.
Free Day & Children’s Workshop
On Thursday August 16th the Ramsgate Maritime Museum will be holding an open day, providing free entry to the museum. There will also be entertainment for children in the form of Toy Theatre workshops run by Robert Poulter, who performed Black Bart’s Last Breakfast at the museum in June.
